Curse

A curse is a prayer which seeks to inflict injury, harm, or misfortune on someone.  In biblical times, people believed that curses had the power to bring about the sinister wish of the person who uttered it. (Youngblood, Bruce & Harrison)

In black magic, the equivalent of a psychic attack is a curse. Some tribal sorcerers are renowned for their ability to magically inflict a wasting disease on a victim, which resists medical treatment.  Some magical rituals involve transmitting the curse via an animal familiar in the form of a snake, scorpion, or other lethal creature.  In other rituals, a substitute for the victim, such as a doll or snip of the victim’s hair serves as a sympathetic magical link which transmits the attack (Guiley).
