In ancient Egyptian religion, Maat is the goddess who personified the virtues of truth, morality, amacability, balance, order and justice. According to Lewis Spence in Ancient Egyptian and Legends, she was known as the Eye of Ra; as the personification of justice her moral power was immense and unstoppable. In the underworld Maat sat in a hall in the temple of the god Osiris guarded by the god Anubis to hear the confessions of the dead.
