Ammit

In ancient Egyptian religion, Ammit is also called the devourer of the dead. A demon goddess with the head of a crocodile, the front legs of a lion and the hind legs of a hippopotamus. The newly deceased were presented to the god Osiris for judgement. The god Anubis placed their hearts (conscience) on the scales of judgment to be weighed against the feather of the god Maat (which represented truth and justice), to determine whether or not the newly deceased were worthy of joining the gods in the fields of peace. The hearts (souls) of those deemed unworthy were devoured by Ammit.
