What are fauns?

in early roman mythtology, fauns were ghosts (jinn), they later evolved to closely resemble greek satyrs; deities of the woods and mountains which manifested in the form of a man with horns, a tail and sometimes had the legs of goats. fauns tended to their master faunus, the grandson of the god Saturn. faunus was worshipped as the god of the fields and shepherds. Romans believed that he spoke to them via the sounds of the forest and in nightmares.
